So you get in, turn the key, the car starts and you’re off. That’s how it usually works, right? Well, it’s not a good idea to put certain auto repair details off. Here are some maintenance items you definitely should not skip over:
Oil change: Although the “3,000-mile rule” isn’t really in effect anymore thanks to improved motor oil formulations, you should still have a conventional oil changed about every 5-6,000 miles. Synthetic oil is about twice as expensive per quart, but it offers superior engine protection (which is why manufacturers now recommend it). Synthetic oil can be changed about every 10-12,000 miles for some vehicles, which helps ease that added per quart cost. However, you should follow the owner's manual recommendations for the appropriate oil change intervals.
Tire maintenance: It’s too easy to take tires for granted. Be sure to have them rotated every 5,000 miles for even wear and good handling/ride quality. Check your tire inflation levels about once a month, and remember to check when the tires are cold and not warmed up already.
Fluids: It’s a little too much to go into here, but your transmission fluid, coolant, and brake fluid can all become contaminated and lose their effectiveness over time. All fluids should be checked and topped off when you have the oil changed. Manufacturer’s recommendations on service intervals for these can vary, but as a general rule transmission fluid should be changed every 50,000 miles and coolant every 40,000 miles (depending on driving habits).
Brakes: It takes brake pad friction material 40-50,000 miles to wear down to a point where the brakes need service. With such gradual wear (over the course of years), it can be hard to know when it’s time for brake repair, so figure on having a brake inspection done at least twice a year to be on the safe side.
Scheduled maintenance: Things like air filters, fuel filters, engine diagnostics and other scheduled items should be followed up on according to factory specs. Failing to do so can result in problems that can escalate and cost you needless money.
